CHANGING THE
CONVERSATION
By Design is a collaborative effort to shift the national conversation on gun violence.
We do this through three key strategies.
LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT
Those most impacted by gun violence will also be positioned to share their expertise through training and technical assistance in media, communications and cultural strategy as well as prevention tactics, healing and self-care. Register for A training here or Contact Us to host a training in your organization or region.
ENGAGING THE POWER
OF MEDIA AND CULTURE
Mass media is regarded as the fourth pillar of democracy. The influence of mass media and popular culture on society both shapes and reflects our values, beliefs and priorities. By Design will develop and share strategic messaging, digital media tools such as memes and video content and partner with influential pop culture allies to advance a new conversation about how to end gun violence in communities of color.
PRIORITIZING INVESTMENT IN
LIFE SAVING SOLUTIONS
Millions of dollars in philanthropic funding, private investment and government funding are directed towards background checks, policing and other solutions that do not address the ways gun violence happens in communities of color. By amplifying the work of violence prevention, By Design will demonstrate the return on investment in proven solutions.
THE POWER OF NARRATIVE
WHY NARRATIVE STRATEGY?
Purpose:
To support leading organizations in developing and implementing a narrative strategy to accompany community safety policy objectives. A narrative strategy is necessary in order to change the conversation about gun violence, its causes and solutions.
Project Goal:
By Design is a strategic narrative intervention and communications campaign informed by and led by identified partners to reframe the national conversation on gun violence by centering the leadership of people of color-led grassroots organizations. To do this, we will:
-
Train and position youth and young adults of color to build power and leadership in both local and national advocacy, utilize cultural engagement strategies and as thought leaders in centers of influence.
-
Build the social and political capital of grassroots partners to push for greater accountability and responsiveness from local and national policy stakeholders and public agencies accountable for perpetuating the conditions that allow gun violence to continue.
-
Advance a counter-narrative to that proliferated by gun manufacturers and corporate beneficiaries of gun violence to mass audiences
-
Create meaningful spaces for Black and Brown to prioritize local solutions that interrupt systems of violence and ultimately build power for communities most impacted by gun violence
